The Beauty of the Antique Wardrobe

By: Carla Winston

Antique wardrobes are without a doubt amongst the most splendid of all household furniture pieces, simply because the craftsmen of yesteryear paid so much attention to detail. This has also meant that their value has continued to increase, although of course, the value can vary tremendously from one piece to the next, depending on their age, their condition, and even who they were made by.

Fortunately for those people who wish to have a wardrobe or two as part of their antique collection, finding an antique wardrobe is a relatively straightforward task. This is largely because the antique business has begun spreading all over the country in recent years, and today it's possible to find some of these magnificent pieces of furniture in several family run dealerships.

Some pawn shops have even branched out to selling antique furniture. While you might normally expect to find smaller antique items in this type of business, you might find the antique wardrobe you have been searching for as well.

You will also want to look for any signatures or engravings on the antique wardrobe that may have been put there by the original builder. If you are lucky enough to find something like this, it will be easier to research the builder and find out exactly what the value of the wardrobe may be.

Of course, once you've made up your mind to begin searching for that special antique wardrobe, your first need to be absolutely certain as to what type of wardrobe you want to buy. Secondly, when you do come across something you like, you'll need to take its condition into consideration. Also, if it's in such good condition that it actually appears to be new, then there is a possibility that it's recently been refurbished.

Even though refinishing can make an old item of furniture look that much more appealing, it can also have a negative impact on the value. After all, the more original an antique wardrobe is, the higher its value will be, although of course it should still be in good condition.

If you are planning on purchasing an antique wardrobe, you don't have to spend a small fortune. Just start checking in local antique shops, used furniture stores, and even pawn shops. You might even find exactly what you are looking for in a shop that sells what others might consider as junk. Just because something is old doesn't mean it has no value.

One of the biggest advantages of finding out the true value of an antique wardrobe is that you'll also be able to determine whether or not you're being offered a fair price. With that said; if the salesperson is asking far less than what the wardrobe is worth then it may be in your best interest to walk away. If on the other hand they are asking slightly more than the actual value, then you're probably getting a good deal, bearing in mind that the business also needs to make a profit.

If you don't intend trying to make some profit on the wardrobe you buy, then you can probably find one which is even better value for money, and then you can do the refinishing yourself whenever you wish. If however you intend to buy an antique wardrobe and then sell it for a profit you'll need to purchase one which is as original as possible, while the same time being in good condition. You should also make a point of doing some research regarding the item you intend buying before you actually hand over your cash.
