Some Kids Toys Can Cause Serious Harm

By: Kirk B Bernard

In the last few years there's been an incredible number of toy recalls. Many of these are because of high levels of lead paint, or due to choking or laceration hazards. It's surprising to see how many of these toys are still on the shelves despite being recalled. Many might even be on the shelves of stores you frequent, you might find them on shelves of second-hand stores or retail outlets. With that said, there are other factors beyond poisonous paint and small parts that can put your little one's safety at risk. Many toys that most people would consider "safe" can be dangerous in the hands of a child that is not old enough for such a toy.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in 2008, over 230,000 injuries involving toys were treated at emergency centers in the United States. Also in 2008, 19 children less than age 15 died in toy-related incidents. Many of these incidents involved cuts, contusions, injuries to the head or face. Here are some guidelines to help prevent many of these major or minor incidents.

- It's important that you read all of the instructions and manufacturer's warnings. If you find a long list of warnings or there are mentions of "serious injuries" you might consider holding off on purchasing that toy.

- If the child is under the age of 8 don't purchase a toy for them that has sharp edges, contains a battery that could be swallowed. It's also important to make sure there's not some sort of heating element in the toy that could cause burns.

- If you have really young children, please do not buy toys with intricate parts that can be swallowed and cause choking hazards. A good test is to twist and pull small parts to see if they fall off. Some small parts are simply not attached correctly and can come free very easily.

- Once you've chosen the perfect toy and you take it home and unwrap it make sure to throw away all of the plastic wrappings properly. Plastic bag and cellophane can cling to the face and should your little one play with it they could risk suffocation.

- If your child is younger than 9, you should refrain from giving him or her toys that contain small magnets. These can fall off and then easily be ingested by young children and could even be fatal. These magnets are extremely risky because you can't tell from the symptoms that your child is suffering from a fatal injury.

- Beware of intensely colored toys! Sure they look shiny and attractive, but those qualities can actually come from excessive amounts of lead paint. In 2009 alone, CPSC demanded the removal of 14 different types of toys due to excessive counts of lead. Ingesting lead can lead to cognitive issues and even brain damage in young children.
